Masút Vineyard and Winery, owned and run by Ben and Jake Fetzer, is the latest edition to the New Generation Wine Portfolio. Masút (a Native American word meaning ‘dark, rich earth’) lies within the newly established Eagle Peak AVA in Mendocino County, Northern California. The undulating contours of the coastal range’s slopes offer a wide and varied selection of micro-climates that affect grape-growing in minute detail, creating diverse flavours and aromas across the 19 distinct blocks of Pinot Noir vines.
The brothers grew up in the vineyards of Mendocino County, their grandparents had moved to the area in the 1950’s and their grandfather’s passion for wine led him to establish Fetzer Vineyards in 1968. In the early 1990’s the Fetzer Vineyard brand was acquired by Brown Forman and their father, Robert acquired the 1200-acre property Masút property in 1994. He purchased the property with the intention of growing the ‘finest Pinot Noir possible’ and began planting vineyards in 1997, the brothers were beginning to see the true potential of the property when their father died. More determined than ever, the brothers spearheaded a petition for a new viticultural area called Eagle Peak Mendocino County and decided to convert a barn on the property to make wine. The winery was founded in 2009 and in 2011 the first vintage was released. The goals of the Fetzer brothers remain steadfast, to produce a great bottle of Pinot Noir from this new growing region, to continue the family legacy in the wine business, and to have fun along the way.
